Coming back to life after 27 years in a coma... there is always hope

Coming back to life after 27 years in a coma... there is always hope

The story began in 1991 in the UAE city of Al Ain when the 32-year-old Mrs. Munira Abdullah was carrying her four-year-old son Omar home from school. They had a terrible traffic accident, from which the son came out unharmed, but the mother was injured in the brain and entered a long coma that lasted. For 27 years!

The mother woke up from her coma to find herself in 2018 as if she had used a time-traveling machine. Omar has been visiting his unconscious mother for the past years. He walked about 4 kilometers a day to the hospital to see her and sit next to her for hours.

Doctors believed that the mother would not wake up from her coma again after all these years, but the miracle happened in 2018 in a German hospital.

Her 32-year-old son, Omar, said that he never gave up hope and belief that she would wake up from a coma one day. According to "The National", the lady visited the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in the UAE and was not convinced until now that she had been robbed when she was 27 years old.

Her son was four years old at the time, he was in the KG1 stage and there were no buses available to take him home, so it was his mother who picked him up every time. After they collided with a bus, there were no mobile phones and they could not call the ambulance, so the mother was left for hours in that condition, waiting for help.

After the ambulance arrived, she was taken to the hospital, her condition was serious, so the doctors recommended that they take her to London for treatment because her body was not fully responding.

After a while, she returned to Al-Ain in the Emirates, and remained in the hospital for several years, feeding through tubes to keep her alive, and physiotherapists also preserved the muscles of her body from atrophy.

Omar chose to take care of his mother and preferred her over his job many times, and he always found time to check on her and stand by her side. He said:

For me it was like gold, the more time passed the more valuable it was, and I believe that not giving it up all these years saved me from big problems.

In 2017, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Mohammed bin Zayed, learned of Ms. Munira's condition, and she was transferred to Germany to start a new treatment phase in Germany, she underwent several surgeries to preserve the muscles of her legs and arms.

Omar says that when he was telling the doctors that his mother would talk to him again, they used to tell him that he was buying illusions and only letting his imagination run wild.

But during the last week of her treatment program in Germany, specifically in June 2018, the unexpected happened. Omar quarreled with a member of the hospital’s medical staff, so the mother felt it and started trying to speak.

After three days of strange, incomprehensible sounds, the son woke up to a voice calling him “Omar” and froze in happiness.

Then she started chanting the names of the relatives, and she could tell them where the pain was and interact with their conversations.

Ms. Munira returned to Abu Dhabi to continue treatment and rehabilitation with her son Omar, who never lost hope of her return to life again and held on to her until she recovered again.
